eBay returns for card sellers

“No returns” doesn't stop a buyer returning a card they say isn't as described. eBay's Money Back Guarantee overrides it. Here are the rules that apply to trading cards, what to do when a request comes in, and how to protect yourself from partial-refund fishing and swapped cards.

The rules for trading cards

No returns on your listingA buyer can still return a card as not as described, but must open the request within 3 calendar days of delivery
Returns acceptedYour return window applies
Your responseWithin 3 business days, or the buyer can ask eBay to step in
Return shippingYou pay on not-as-described returns; your policy decides on change-of-mind returns
RefundDue within 2 business days of the card arriving back

The 3-day window is specific to trading cards (and a few other categories such as coins) on listings that don't offer returns. Elsewhere on eBay, the buyer has 30 days.

When a return request comes in

Your options on a not-as-described request:

  • Accept the return. You refund in full, including the original shipping, and pay for the return.
  • Refund in full and let the buyer keep the card. Often cheapest on a low-value card, once you add up return postage.
  • Offer a partial refund. The buyer keeps the card. You can offer it once, and the buyer can accept or refuse.
  • Message the buyer, or offer a replacement.

You can only decline a change-of-mind return on a no-returns listing. Whatever you choose, answer within 3 business days. If you don't, eBay may accept the return for you, or refund the buyer and charge you without the card coming back.

How to handle it

  1. Compare the claim with your listing. Look at your photos, condition and description. If you missed a crease or listed the wrong parallel, it's a fair claim: accept it or offer a partial refund, and move on.
  2. If you think the claim is false, accept the return anyway rather than arguing. Once eBay steps in, you lose some of your options, including the deduction described below.
  3. When the card comes back, check it's the same card before refunding. For a slab, check the cert number. For a raw card, compare it with your scans or photos: corners, centering, print marks.
  4. If it's a different card, or came back damaged, report the buyer from the return, within 2 business days of it arriving.

Swapped and damaged returns

eBay's policies say the exact item you sold has to come back for a full refund, with any grading certificate, and returning a different item is listed as abusive buyer behavior. If a card comes back used or damaged, you may be able to deduct up to 50% of the refund:

  • Top Rated Sellers, if the listing offered returns of 30 days or more
  • Other sellers, if they aren't Below Standard and the listing offered free returns

You have to report the buyer and refund within 2 business days of receiving the card, and the option is gone once eBay has stepped in.

Partial refund demands

A message like “refund me $10 or I'll leave negative feedback” breaks two eBay rules: asking for a partial refund without returning the item is listed as abusive buyer behavior, and feedback used to extort a seller can be removed. Keep every exchange in eBay messages, where eBay can see it, and report the buyer. eBay says it removes the feedback and defects when it can see the buyer's demands in messages.

Protect yourself before you ship

  • Pick the condition honestly, and name the flaws. The condition guide explains what eBay's four conditions mean.
  • Keep clear front and back images of every card you sell. They show what you sent, and let you tell a returned card from a swap.
  • Note cert numbers for slabs, and serial numbers for numbered cards.
  • For expensive cards, record yourself packing them, showing the card and then the sealed package.
  • Ship anything you'd hate to lose with full tracking. Standard Envelope's tracking is limited, which makes not-received claims harder to fight (see the Standard Envelope guide).

Authenticity Guarantee cards

Cards sold for $200 or more go through PSA before reaching the buyer. If you don't offer returns, they're a final sale and aren't covered for not-as-described claims, only for shipping damage. If you do accept returns, the card goes back through PSA, and one that comes back in a different condition is sent back to the buyer with no refund. More in the Authenticity Guarantee guide.

What returns do to your account

Not-as-described returns count toward your seller metrics. A very high not-as-described rate adds 5% to your final value fees, and a Below Standard account pays 6% more. eBay removes defects and feedback when it finds a buyer acted abusively, so report those buyers. You can also block a buyer from buying from you again, up to 5,000 usernames, in your blocked buyers list.

Questions sellers ask

Can a buyer return a card if I don't accept returns?
Yes, if they say it isn't as described. eBay's Money Back Guarantee overrides a no-returns policy for not-as-described claims. For trading cards on a no-returns listing, the buyer has to open the request within 3 calendar days of delivery.
Who pays return shipping on a not-as-described return?
The seller. eBay can issue the buyer a return label and charge it to you. For buyer's remorse returns, your listing's return policy decides who pays.
How long do I have to respond to a return request?
Three business days. After that the buyer can ask eBay to step in, and eBay may accept the return for you or refund the buyer without the card being sent back.
What if the buyer returns a different card?
Returning a different item breaks eBay's abusive buyer policy, and a full refund requires the exact item you sold. Report the buyer from the return and compare the card with your photos, and for a slab, the cert number.
Can a buyer demand a partial refund?
Asking for a partial refund without returning the item is listed as not allowed in eBay's abusive buyer policy, and feedback used to extort another member can be removed. Keep the conversation in eBay messages so eBay can see it.
